Not too long ago Google bought a security company who was known for email security. Since October 2007, when Google shelled out $625 billion for the firm, Google Apps has grown into an often talked about force in the SaaS (Software as a Service) market. Yesterday, Google announced new security plans using Postini technology to further the advances to the SaaS realm.

SaaS is something that is somewhat new; however, it has been around for a few years now. You do not hear a lot about it, simply because most large companies have an established link with business production tools. Email, document creation, editing and more are mostly run by Microsoft or IBM. (Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes) Google Apps is a Software as a Service offering that takes some of the stress off a company no matter the size and offers cost savings and ease of use. Cost is important, but in IT ease of use counts too, allowing less time spent deskside training employees.
The new security enhancements offered Tuesday are sure help advance Google Apps in the long run. However, most of them are simply things that were planned for a while now. The new addition to the Google Apps line up expands on what Postini knows best, message filtering, encryption and archiving. Designed to work in any business environment, Google's new security services work with any mail system, such as Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise. Price point is another feature Google mentions. The cost starts at $3 per year per user.
“As threats rise in volume and complexity, and compliance requirements pile up, IT is struggling to find the resources to keep up,” said Scott Petry, director of product management, Google. “Now, Google can take care of this for you. Organizations of all shapes and sizes can get access to Google's industry leading security and compliance technologies.”
The problem with SaaS is that many companies are hesitant to change from what they know. The new offering of Postini security to those without Google Apps is a positive start to introduce a company to SaaS.
