Money site Bloomberg today reports that California-based computer company Apple Inc. has announced the price of its 1GB iPod Shuffle music player is to be reduced from $79 USD down to an even more pennywise $49 USD, a drop of 38 percent.

The price alteration has been implemented due to a slowing of growth in the 1GB model during the last quarter. And, to further boost the appeal of its Shuffle option, Apple has also revealed a new 2GB model that will retail for just $69 USD, a full $10 USD cheaper than the 1GB’s old price point.
Apple is hoping the price cuts and storage enhancements will boost momentum for its previously best-selling music player in light of retail pacing dropping to just 5 percent during the last quarter, which is a significant fall when compared to the 15 percent it maintained across the four prior quarterly periods.
The new 2GB iPod Shuffle will hold around 500 randomly played song tracks, while the original 1GB version is capable of storing around 250. The official Apple site outlines that operating playback time is around 12 hours.
The introduction of the 2GB iPod Shuffle comes hot on the heels of a similar storage overhaul to the iPod range, which saw Apple this month introduce fresh device models with doubled memory to help inspire revived interest at retail.
Since the initial launch of the Apple iPod in 2001, more than 140 million units of the device (in its various guises) have been sold worldwide.
