With the HD format not well and truly over, it comes as scant little surprise to learn that leading electronics retailers have begun hacking down hardware and software prices connected to Toshiba’s defeated HD DVD platform in an effort to clear stock.

Information Week reports that leading online retailer Amazon has already knocked between 30 and 50 percent off prices of HD DVD movie titles such as 2007 summer blockbuster Transformers, animated epic Beowulf, serial killer thriller Zodiac, and the complete Bourne trilogy (Identity, Ultimatum and Supremacy).
Similarly, the Amazon price of Toshiba’s HD-A3 player has dropped by a third, plunging from $150 down to a wallet-tempting $100, while the HD-A30 has fallen from $200 to $130, and the more desirable HD-A35 has shifted from $300 USD to $197 USD. Amazon also offers a mail-in rebate of five free movie titles on qualifying Toshiba players.
Circuit City is following Amazon’s pacing, offering the same players at similar prices while attempting to sprinkle a little consumer sugar on its deals by padding out the price reductions with HD DVD movies The Bourne Identity and action spectacular 300.
Xbox 360 owners looking to perhaps get in on the action will be interested to know that rumours are suggesting GameStop is to drop the price of the 360’s standalone HD DVD player to a meagre $50 USD in the next few days, which may prompt a flood of activity for the videogame retailer as gamers swarm to snap up bargain units.
“I've confirmed through the people I know at GameStop that the 360 add-on is dropping to $50,” comments Daniel Hirshleifer, editor of DVD Talk regarding the price drop rumour. “They didn't mention if that was just Gamestop's price, or if it's going to be a directive from Microsoft, but it jives with the rumor we heard earlier, so I'm going to assume we'll see it for $50 everywhere very soon.”
Expect to see more price drop activity on HD DVD hardware and software in the coming days and weeks.
