Japanese electronics company Toshiba Corp. has this week announced its brand new 1.8-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) for mobile personal computers, which are each integrated with a performance enhancing Serial-ATA interface.

Arriving as the first of Toshiba’s mobile PC drives to employ the Serial-ATA (2.6) interface, which boosts data transfer rates beyond those achieved by the parallel ATA interface, the MK1216GSG offers up a solid 120GB of storage capacity, while the slightly less spacious MK8016GSG comes with a capacity of 80GB.
The drives feature an interface speed of 1.5Gbps and also function with a rotation speed of 5,400rpm, which Toshiba claims is 29 percent quicker than its current generation of 1.8-inch HDD (the 120GB MK1214GAH) and will enable even faster data access in reading and writing while also enhancing overall drive performance.
Both drives are equally compact in physical sizing, offering up dimensions of 54mm x 78.5mm x 8mm and a weight of just 62g. In terms of length, the new mobile PC HDDs are barely taller than a conventional AAA pencil battery.
“Hard disk drives for mobile PCs must be small, light and able to withstand vibration and shock. While Toshiba’s 1.8-inch drives are more robust than 2.5-inch HDD, they have not matched the larger drives in data transfer rates,” outlines Toshiba.
“However, the launch of new 1.8-inch drives that combine the use of the serial ATA interface with boosted rotational speed achieves high speed transfer rates. The new drives also run much more quietly than 2.5-inch HDD, close to silent, making the new products much more suited to mobile PC.”
While also delivering improved shock and vibration protection, Toshiba is keen to point out that its new 1.8-inch HDDs comply with the EU’s RoHS directive and achieve power consumption efficiency of 0.00375W/GB (MK1216GSG), as defined in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Energy Conservation Law, which assures a more environmentally friendly design.
Toshiba will be showcasing its new HDD duo at the Intel Mobility Summit in Shanghai between February 26 and February 28 ahead of both drives moving into mass production this coming April.
