Consumer electronics specialist Creative has this week moved to counter the appeal of Apple’s iPod Nano by hacking down UK prices connected to its popular ZEN MP3 player range.

Specifically, the 4GB version of the diminutive, credit card-sized ZEN is dropping from £89.99 to £79.99, while the more roomy 8GB model is shifting down from £119.99 to £99.99. The price cuts officially came into effect on February 25.
For prospective MP3 player consumers, Creative is keen to point out that £99.99 for an 8GB ZEN is the same suggested retail price you’d be expected to pay for a 4GB iPod Nano.
Hailed as a “small wonder” by its creator, all players in the ZEN range offer users a 2.5-inch TFT display screen boasting 16.7 million colours to boost enjoyment of MJPEG or WMV9 video files at a resolution of 320x240.
Video entertainment can also be expanded by using the ZEN’s provided software, which automatically converts from other formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG4-SP, DivX4, DivX5, and XviD.
From an audio perspective, the ZEN supports MP3 and WMA formats and is also compatible with iTunes Plus music files, which are Apple’s unprotected AAC files.
Other ZEN features include a built-in FM radio (with 34 presets), an onboard microphone, an SD memory card slot for storage expansion and easy content transfer, and up to 30 hours of single-charge playback.
And, for those looking to cram some seriously vast content into the tiny digital music and media player, Creative has recently unveiled the new 32GB ZEN (£249.99), which can carry up to 16,000 music tracks.
