Not that aesthetic changes make a blind bit of difference to processing performance, but prospective PlayStation 3 owners not moved by the existing black console options might be swayed by rumours of an incoming white model of Sony’s powerhouse videogame platform.

According to a recent surge of rumours, various North American retail outlets are preparing to bring the current 40GB PlayStation 3 and Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray promotional bundle to a close.
Building on that speculation, gaming site Kotaku has this week offered that retailers have stopped taking stock renewals on the bundle and have been told to prepare for new batches of the 40GB PS3 console, but without an included Blu-ray movie disc.
While all promo bundles come to a close at some point, Kotaku claims Circuit City employees have relayed that the upcoming replacement 40GB stock is notably different in terms of the assigned model number attached to the shipping details: CECHH01.
If reports are to be believed then that number is exactly the same as the one attributed to the white PlayStation 3 that is already available in Japan.
The frustrating part for colour-conscious games consumers is that while the white PlayStation 3 might soon be nestling in the stock rooms of American retail stores, chances are that none of them will hit shop floors (not literally) until the Spider-Man 3 bundles have been cleared.
So, the PlayStation 3 might soon be able to match the Xbox 360 -- at least in its colour choices -- with both consoles available in black and white. However, truly committed colour-led consumers wanting to drown in a sea of choice need only look to the Nintendo DS (the world’s best-selling console) for literally ever colour option in the spectrum.

Wow that looks beautiful. I mean the original PS3 is pretty cool but this is...heaven. If they put this in the Metal Gear Solid/PS3/Dualshock 3 Bundle, that would be great. I highly doubt it though. Oh well, like I said the original PS3 is good enough - plus the one w/ MGS is 80gb and backwards compatible with PS2 games haha!
