Globally popular social networking destination Facebook has this week thrown a musical cat in amongst MySpace’s pigeons by introducing a dedicated site pages to aspiring bands looking for exposure -- a route previously highlighted by News Corp’s MySpace.

The deal, which has been formed in partnership with Apple’s iTunes download portal, will allow budding musicians to craft specific band profiles in order to host songs, music videos and photos for their burgeoning fan bases. In turn, those visiting Facebook fans will be able to rate and review that content as well as signing on to the band’s mailing list.
Interestingly, bands will also be able to use their Facebook pages as convenient marketing tools, offering gig tickets and band-related merchandise for direct purchase via Music Today, reports MacWorld.
While any musical content posted by bands can be freely streamed by Facebook visitors, the deal with Apple will provide them with instant links to the iTunes Store where tracks can be purchased directly.
Already established bands that have reportedly signed on to boost the deal’s profile include melodic Brit whiners Coldplay, one-hit wonders Gnarls Barkley, and the unknown-outside-of-the-United States Dave Matthews Band.
Facebook tools placed at the disposal of bands who sign up for the unique exposure opportunity include a Flash player, a Music player, a discography application, a Music Shop, and also bulletin-sending software iCast.
