Fans of Sony’s PlayStation 3 videogame console have been eager to enjoy the interactive benefits of in-game communication ever since rumours of its arrival first began spreading across the Net.

Now, following Sony’s prolonged silences and vague promises, it would appear that an upcoming PS3 firmware update (v2.4) will end the torment of fan frustration and deliver the much-touted XMB interface that has been sitting on the gaming horizon for eons.
Speaking with gaming trade publication MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment bigwig Ray Maguire has indicated that the new feature will be just one element of the console’s summer firmware update.
It’s arrival will enable PlayStation 3 gamers to engage in voice and text-based messaging while playing any compatible videogame titles -- some of which are already available.
“Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third-party partners and our own studios,” said Maguire.
Thanking Sony’s trade and business partners for their assistance at the start of the PS3 journey, Maguire also revealed that the PlayStation 3 has now surpassed the 1 million unit sales point in the UK, and has done so quicker than either the original PlayStation or the PlayStation 2.
