As expected, Apple held an event at their Cupertino headquarters yesterday to discuss the future of software on the iPhone. During the event, Apple showed off some of the features that would be included in their 2.0 software, which will be released this June.

Included in the 2.0 update is the SDK that will allow developers around the world to create third party applications for the iPhone and iPod touch.
"We're excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "iPhone's enterprise features combined with its revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface and advanced software architecture provide the best user experience and the most advanced software platform ever for a mobile device."
Come June, when the 2.0 update is released, users will have an application on their home screen that will be similar to the iTunes store but will allow them to download third party applications. The price of each application is dependent on the developer and 30% of all costs will go to Apple for distributing. All applications that are created will have to be approved by Apple and can only be distributed by Apple.
Some of the things that we can look forward to is the ability to do a mass delete of emails on the Mail app, the ability to look at Word, Powerpoint and Excel via email in the Mail app, games published by Sega and an AIM client provided by AOL (finally).
The update will be available for free to all owners of the iPhone and iPod Touch this June.
