Despite reports to the contrary, the latest round of speculation suggesting the imminent online arrival of The Beatles back catalogue on iTunes has been swiftly trashed by store owner Apple Inc.

Apple’s denial has been issued following a sudden build up of UK press rumour on the subject, which outlined that Sir Paul McCartney had struck a deal with the California-based computer company (and other online music portals) to finally make Beatles music available online for legal purchase.
“This is not news nor is it a scoop,” said an Apple spokesman regarding the press whispers, which were also labelled as “unsubstantiated speculation.”
While Apple Inc. has indeed spoken out against last week’s rumours gathered from unnamed sources cited as being “close to Sir Paul McCartney,” Beatles record labels Apple Corps and EMI Group have both so far declined to give comment.
Even though this particular flurry of Beatles chatter has been quashed by at least one major player in the ongoing debate to bring the biggest band of all time into the online age, it is generally expected that the Beatles will be available online before the close of 2008.
With the protracted trademark dispute between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps finally resolved in early 2007, McCartney himself said in November of 2007 that he was “pretty sure it’ll be happening next year,” and that a deal to take The Beatles online was going through a process of “fine-tuning.”
