Tough and robust wristwatch design might be moving ever-forward in the world of technology, but renowned watchmaker Casio is taking a marked backward step in terms of aesthetics with the recent unveiling of its classic retro G-Shock range.

The new (or old, depending on your viewpoint) G-Shock Vivid Colours G5500C comes in a choice of three ‘vivid colours’ that coordinate with the resin band and the watch face to provide all-over retro style. The colour options available are red on red, green on green, and white on gold.
Classic, and potentially gaudy, design aside, this latest model of the ever-popular G-Shock line isn’t without its modern internal qualities, coming equipped with Casio’s Tough Solar Power Technology, which helps power high-load functions through a “super sensitive solar panel with a high-capacity rechargeable battery.”
The G5500C also boasts an automatic lighting feature that illuminates the face whenever the watch is angled by the user for viewing. And, in order to prevent power wastage, the auto light has a save function that limits the light’s operation to times when available light drops beneath a certain level.
“We respect the continued support of classic G-Shock enthusiasts who have embraced the brand for years,” said Dave Johnson, Senior General Manager of Casio's Timepiece Division. “The new vivid color collection reflects our commitment to our most fashion forward consumer.”
While the Vivid Colours selection may very well ring true with the more fashion-conscious watch wearer, those G-Shock fans looking to the G5500C for the brand’s long established hard-wearing reliance and rich features list won’t be in any way disappointed.
Specifically, the watch comes complete with dependable shock resistance, 200 metres of water resistance, a World Time feature spread across 48 cities, 4 Daily Alarms, a Snooze Alarm, Hourly Time Signal, a Countdown Timer, 1/100 Sec. Stopwatch, 12/24 Hr. Format, Battery Level Indicator, Power Save Function Tone, and Battery Tone Operation On/Off.
And, of course, the other great feature that always accompanies Casio’s G-Shock releases is the pocket-friendly price tag, which, in the case of the new Vivid Colours G5500C, means consumers will only need to find a mere $120 USD for the privilege of strapping on a slab of true retro cool.
