Though it has a better reputation for security of information than its social network competitors, the site will introduce more stringent measures which will allow members to create and manage lists of friends who will be granted different levels of information access.
The new measures come as the site has twice recently come under criticism for new features which users say compromises security, reports the New York Times.
According to CNET coverage of the announcement: "Naomi Gleit, Facebook's product manager for privacy and internationalisation, previewed the updated options, which include a new "Friend of Friends" option based on social proximity--not unlike LinkedIn profiles, in which profile information is visible to second- and third-degree contacts rather than the site's members as a whole. Facebook members will also be able to include or exclude certain friends from having access to information."
Facebook's 67 million members will also be able to access a new chat system, called Facebook Chat, which will be launched in two weeks. "When you log in to the site there is a Chat (user interface) at the bottom of the browser...It's unobtrusive and there when you need it," said product manager Peter Deng. No additional downloads are required with Facebook Chat and it works with all browsers.
All conversations in Facebook Chat will be archived for 90 days however users have the option of deleting them at any time.
"We want Facebook to be part of your experience all over the Web," Matt Cohler, vice president of strategy and business operations said. "Our business is not to make Facebook an island."
