Not to be outdone by the competition, Apple Inc. has officially rolled out Safari 3.1, the latest version of the California-based computer company’s popular Web browser.

Arriving as yet another browsing alternative to Microsoft’s market-leading Internet Explorer, which is bundled as standard alongside the Windows operating system, Apple’s Safari 3.1 follows hot on the heels of last week’s public unveiling of Mozilla’s Firefox 3 (beta 4) browser.
According to Apple, Safari 3.1 is “the world’s fastest web browser for Mac and Windows PCs,” offering up page-loading performance 1.9 times faster than IE 7 and a further 1.7 times quicker than Firefox 2.
Bold number claims indeed from Apple regarding its new browser release, although its product comparisons are based on Microsoft and Mozilla’s outdated browsers. Both of Apple’s rivals have now moved on, with Microsoft offering Internet Explorer 8 and Mozilla offering Firefox 3.
That said, Apple also claims Safari 3.1 is capable of running JavaScript “up to six times faster than other browsers,” and is also the very first of its kind to support the latest innovative Web standards required for the delivery of the next generation of highly interactive Web 2.0 experiences.
“Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use and features an elegant user interface,” enthused Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “And best of all, Safari supports the latest audio, video and animation standards for an industry-leading Web 2.0 experience.”
Safari 3.1 offers uses the chance to take advantage of intuitive browsing thanks to enhanced page loading, drag-and-drop bookmarks, easy-to-organise window tabs, an integrated Find function that displays the specific number of page matches, and also a built-in RSS reader.
“Safari 3.1 is the first browser to support the new video and audio tags in HTML 5 and the first to support CSS Animations,” beams Apple regarding its new browsing addition. “Safari also supports CSS Web Fonts, giving designers limitless choices of fonts to create stunning new web sites.”

Safari 3.1 is compatible with Mac systems running Mac OS X Leopard or Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.11, it also requires a minimum of 256MB of memory. PC systems with Windows XP or Windows Vista, a minimum of 256MB of memory, and a system with at least a 500MHz Intel Pentium processor can also host the new browser.
