Aimed specifically at slim-line PC systems and mainstream/high performance laptops, the 320GB offering is a second-generation 7200RPM SATA drive that Fujitsu claims “rivals the performance of traditional 3.5-inch form factor desktop HDDs.”
Further to that, Tokyo-based Fujitsu outlines that adopters of its new drive will be able to apply its usage advantages to benefit a wide range of applications, such the storing and running of simultaneous multimedia elements such as photo images, high-definition video content, along with office software and documentation, and also computer gaming.
“Fujitsu has set the bar by announcing the first 320GB HDD in this class,” commented John Monroe, research vice president of Gartner Inc., while also noting that the market research expert anticipates global shipments of the 2.5-inch 7200RPM SATA drive will jump by around 90 percent between 2007 and 2008.
“We expect the increased capacity and performance of 7200RPM HDD will create new opportunities for personal computing manufacturers to produce a rich user experience designed to leverage the latest developments in gaming, video and multimedia laptop applications,” he added.
And, according to Fujitsu, the 320GB capacity of its 2.5-inch form factor will enable hardware manufacturers to design and incorporate creative new PC systems and related applications “that aren’t inhibited by performance and capacity limitations.”
“Users continue to demand increased HDD capacity and speed, and we are taking an impressive step in that direction by delivering the first 320GB 7200RPM mobile drives,” enthused Georg Dietsch, Fujitsu Director Storage Products Group EMEA.
Relevant technical specifications attached to the new MHZ2 BJ line include five storage options ranging from 80GB through to 320GB, while the drive itself offers a rotational speed of 7200RPM built on a SATA interface (3.0 Gb/sec or 1.5Gb/sec), a buffer to host transfer rate of 300MB/sec, and a read and write seek time of 10.5/12.5msec.
Fujitsu’s new drive also delivers “Best-in-Class” energy efficiency thanks to 0.8 watts of power consumption when idle and 0.13 watts when in standby and sleep mode. Read and write power consumption is a meagre 2.3 watts. It also offers “Best-in-Class” noise levels with an acoustic idle of 2.5 bels.
The 320GB MHZ2 BJ HDD drives are expected to ship to manufacturers by the close of June 2008.
