Fans of online DVD rental specialist Netflix were temporarily left in dire straits earlier this week when the popular service’s Web site abruptly disappeared from the Internet on Monday.

Offline for almost 12 hours, customers were once again able to enjoy access to Netflix’s huge wealth of DVD titles on Tuesday following the swift ironing out of the unspecified technical speed bump that succeeded in derailing the service.
“We’re shipping everything that should have been shipped yesterday as well as what we’d normally ship today,” commented Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey in a Reuters report.
According to the Netflix representative, those customers who have suffered delivery delays because of the Internet blip are likely to receive some form of remuneration for the unannounced service gap.
However, the California-based company, which boasts some 7.5 million customers, has not yet decided how best to implement the planned act of compensation, which could see Netflix crediting the accounts of all those affected.
The online glitch resulted in direct damage to the company’s supply chain, which saw the majority of Netflix’s 52 distribution centres put out of action during the outage.
Somewhat ironically, the Netflix online issue chose to rear its ugly head on the same day shares in the company rose more than 9 percent to an all-time high of $39.65, a massive 79 percent leap since January 15 of 2008. Shares fell 2.1 percent to $37.37 during the outage.
Offering flat rate rentals-by-mail to customers across the United States since the late 1990s, Netflix boasts a diverse range of around 100,000 DVD titles on more than 55 million discs. The service ships an average of 1.6 million discs per day.
