The growth of Apple’s iTunes Store looks almost as unstoppable as the California-based gadget maker’s line of trendy electronic devices, and today’s news that iTunes has overhauled Wal-Mart to lead the US retail market only reinforces that notion.

Specifically, new data released by market research company NPD Group reveals iTunes to be the number one music seller in the United States, boasting a customer base of more than 50 million while also having sold in excess of four billion song tracks.
“We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world,” trumpeted Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone.”
NPD Group’s research findings were taken from its new MusicWatch survey, which highlighted the iTunes Store online music and media portal as the largest music retailer in the US based on the amount of music it sold during the months of January and February of 2008. Results were based o 12 tracks representing one full CD.
Apple iTunes’ dislodging of American retail giant Wal-Mart as the country’s leading music seller comes only a month after NPD Group announced that it had similarly surpassed the likes of Best Buy and Target to occupy the number two position.
