Having already impressed the small form world with the arrival of its budget priced EeePC laptop, Taiwan-based ASUSTek is now making a concerted bid to do likewise in the desktop market with its new Essentio CS5110 Mini PC.

While it may sound like a spell lifted from the pages of Harry Potter, ASUS describes the sleek and sexy Essentio as a Mini PC that casts its main focus on exceptional graphics performance. In that sense, the Essentio arrives as “the world’s smallest Desktop PC equipped with a fully embedded discrete graphics card” to deliver HD movie pleasure and smooth gaming fun into the hands of consumers.
While the acclaimed EeePC is built on ASUSTek’s three kinds of “Easy,” the new Essentio and its mini stature is built on “Mighty” attributes such as 1080p High Definition visuals (Mighty Fluency), S/PIDF audio output and 7.1 Sound (Mighty Sound), and 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR connectivity (Mighty Versatile).
ASUS also notes that its Essentio boasts an operational noise level of just 23.9dB at idle, which it claims is “quieter than most other computer systems in the market,” thanks to the world’s first 2-in-1 thermal module that insulates heat from the cooling fan in a fast, reliable and ultra quiet dissipation system.
Other core specifications include a choice of Intel processors ranging from Core2 Duo through to Celeron D, a front side bus topping out at 1333MHz (800MHz basic), onboard Blu-ray and Windows Vista Home Premium. Memory is available via Dual Channel DDR2 800, while storage runs on a 3.5-inch SATAII HDD offering from 250GB to a full 1TB of space.
Graphics power is provided by the MXM MN8600M GT 256M, while audio is delivered by Azalia 7.1 Sounds and optical S/PDIF output (not exactly the latest NVIDIA and Dolby set-up). Connections include HDMI out, a 10-in-1 card reader, a total of six USB 2.0 sockets, and headphone and microphone points.
The Essentio slim line Mini PC’s dimensions are a mere 20cm x 29cm x 8cm, and its physical weight is just 3.4kg. Accessories include a Slim Multimedia Keyboard and Mouse, a Vista MCE remote, a HDMI to DVI adapter, and an Anti-Slip Pad.
Regional pricing and availability have yet to be announced for the oddly PlayStation 3-esque Essentio Mini PC.
