Taiwanese motherboard and Mini-PC specialist Shuttle Inc. belatedly emerges as yet another computer hardware maker saddled with the misfortune of arriving a little late to the HD party.

More pointedly, Shuttle has this week rolled out its new XPC G5 6801M, a complete Mini-PC offering equipped with a HD-friendly combination drive provided by LG Electronics, making the diminutive computer capable of hosting movie playback in both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats.
Sadly all dressed up with nowhere to go, the apparent platform flexibility captured within Shuttle’s new Mini-PC may be deemed by critics and consumers alike as little more than wasted effort -- not least because Sony’s Blu-ray technology has now been crowned as the HD industry stand following the February 2008 demise of Toshiba’s HD DVD alternative.
Other points of note connected with the new XPC G5 6801M include it being the very first HD-compatible Shuttle Mini-PC to be powered by AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) chip technology, marking a departure from Shuttle’s customary reliance on Intel Corporation processors.
The XPC G5 6801M runs on the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor and is supported by a solid 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM memory and Microsoft’s Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. Other features include 8-channel audio, Gigabit-LAN, FireWire, and a total of six USB ports and eSATA ports.
Shuttle outlines that its new Mini-PC comes with a user-friendly Media Centre to better handle fluid SD and HD movie playback, and it also has TV reception, remote control execution, a handy Time-Shift function and a variety of recording/burning options too.
Also, prospective HD consumers can enjoy simple view transfer of their Blu-ray movies to a waiting high-definition television thanks to the inclusion of a single HDMI cable, which promptly delivers top quality image and sound without the user incurring any expensive installation costs.
Those looking to slap down a moderate amount of cash in return for Shuttle’s latest, and distinctly midi-system styled, Mini-PC can invest now via specialist retailers for a recommended price of 1,234 Euros, without the inclusion of VAT.
