Every year since its inception, the (now slightly scaled back and invitation-only) E3 videogame expo in California has been a veritable haven of software and hardware-based rumour.

This year’s event looks to be no exception following the emergence of Net chatter suggesting Nintendo will use the 2008 E3 Business and Media Summit to announce yet another re-imagined version of its wildly popular Nintendo DS console.
Pre-empting the speculation that is bound to surface come E3’s arrival in June, this particular slice of pre-expo rumour hails from Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain, which has leading videogame publication Famitsu parked in its stable.
Specifically, Enterbrain boss Hirokazu Hamamura has claimed that Nintendo will continue its sales tactic of applying a bi-annual hardware overhaul to its touch-screen DS console by announcing the new ‘Nintendo DS Extreme’ during E3.
Based on that notion, it is now approaching four years since Nintendo first revealed the innovative dual-screen DS, and two years since it replaced the original DS with the more sleekly defined and technically tweaked DS Lite model.
During its time at market, the Nintendo DS has risen to become the world’s biggest selling videogame platform. In 2007, it even succeeded in holding off the likes of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and even its Nintendo stablemate, the motion-sensing Wii.
Industry reaction to the rumour, which has not yet garnered any official confirmation or denial (expect the latter) from Nintendo, is to suppose that the Japanese gaming giant will completely abandon the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot carried by the DS and DS Lite in order to cut back further on production costs while shrinking the console’s physical sizing even more.
There’s also chatter pointing to the inclusion of slightly larger screens, improved sound, enhanced online functions, and the addition of an onboard toaster and teas maid set. Sadly, a pump-action butter dispenser will not be making an appearance until the 2010 release of the Nintendo DS Gullible.
