Coffee-selling behemoth Starbucks has this week revealed a new ‘Pick of the Week’ program that it is running in conjunction with Apple’s hugely popular iTunes Store. The weekly feature will enable Starbucks customers to access complimentary new music and music video content via their ever-faithful iPod players.
The promotional program will shift into action each Tuesday and see more than 7,000 Starbucks stores across the United States offering their customers a special Pick of the Week download card, which delivers a free song or music video back to the customer when redeemed through the iTunes Store.
The Pick of the Week selections will be “hand-picked by the Starbucks Entertainment team and iTunes.” International artists trumpeted to appear through the program include the likes of UK soul sensations Duffy and Adele, classic warbling songstress Carly Simon, renowned California rock band Counting Crows, and Australia’s eclectic Sia.
This week’s opening Pick of the Week offering at participating Starbucks coffee shops is “Washington Square,” the new track from Counting Crows’ latest album “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings.”
“Pick of the Week provides an incredible way for Starbucks customers to discover great new music and videos for free on the iTunes Store,” enthused Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “With the world’s largest online catalog of music and video there is truly something for everyone.”
The new Pick of the Week program arrives following “unprecedented” customer response to a similar complimentary ‘Song of the Day’ promotional offer that Starbucks and iTunes ran during the month of October in 2007. More than 6 million songs were downloaded during that short time, says Starbucks.
Customers obtaining Pick of the Week cards will have 60 days to claim their free song or video from iTunes, although those readily armed with their iPods will be able to do so immediately thanks to the convenience of Wi-Fi hot spot access to iTunes at select Starbucks locations.
