In the videogame world, a single software release surpassing 1 million retail sales is often trumpeted as a success, while an individual series shifting into double digit millions is hailed as an unmitigated phenomenon. So how should we classify The Sims, a phenomenally successful series that has now notched up 100 million unit sales globally?

Third-party videogame publisher Electronic Arts has this week shone the spotlight of achievement on the landmark 100 million sales racked up by its The Sims franchise, outlining that since its initial arrival in 2000 the hugely popular life simulation has risen to become the “best-selling PC game franchise of all time,” being sold in 22 gameplay languages throughout 60 countries.
Furthermore, The Sims experience has led to the creation of TheSims2.com community Web site, which boasts more than 4.3 million unique visitors every month, who have contributed to the download of more than 70 million user-generated The Sims creations.
“The Sims is truly unique in the world of interactive entertainment because it attracts creative people around the world of all ages and both genders,” enthused Nancy Smith, President of The Sims Label. “Because of the open-ended creative freedom that players experience with the game, The Sims has universal appeal like no other game franchise.”
As a thank you for the franchise’s success and the wealth of stories, characters, fashion, furniture and homes created by the imagination and humour of the ever-expanding Sims community, EA is gifting visitors to TheSims2.com site with a free outfit for their Sims in order to join in with the celebrations.
