In terms of technical specifications, Western Digital has revealed that the VelociRaptor arrives as a 2.5-inch drive that offers a total storage capacity of 300GB via a spin speed performance of 10,000 RPM.
Built on enterprise foundations, the VelociRaptor has been modified specifically for PC and Apple Mac enthusiasts along with professional workstations, outlines the California-based company.
Moreover, WD claims the VelociRaptor is set to become the new “high- performance favorite” with the above mentioned user groups thanks to it packing in twice the storage capacity and a 35 percent performance increase over the company’s previous Raptor drive.
“We created WD VelociRaptor hard drives to lead PC enthusiasts into the next era of PC and Mac storage performance and satisfy their insatiable thirst for computing speed,” enthused Tom McDorman, VP and GM of WD’s enterprise business unit. “The new WD VelociRaptor delivers the greatest performance and reliability of all SATA hard drives currently on the market.”
Features included within WD’s newest Raptor include optimised performance through Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) technology, a SATA 3 Gb/s interface and 16MB cache delivering “mind-bending performance.” The VelociRaptor also offers a mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) rate of 1.4 million hours, which is “the highest available reliability rating of any SATA drive,” according to WD.
Cooling efficiency is provided via the drive’s special 3.5-inch IcePack mounting frame, which is an enterprise-class enclosure with a built-in heat sink for maintaining extra cool operation when fitted within a high-performance desktop PC. Those looking to be early embracers of the WD VelociRaptor can do so via Alienware’s ALX gaming desktop, which will be unleashed by the close of April. More widespread availability will become apparent through WD’s online store and select distributors by the middle of May. The 300GB WD VelociRaptor will cost $299 USD.
