Set to make its official appearance at this year’s Computex trade show in Taipei, which will be held in June, the miniature Atom processor is to be showcased within yet another Eee PC hardware addition, claims PC World.
Known via the moniker ‘Diamondville’ during its development, Intel’s Atom chip technology has been specially optimised for inclusion within small form, low-cost computers and mobile Internet devices (MIDs).
Measuring less than 25 square millimetres in physical size, Intel outlines that its Atom processor is capable of pushing up to 1.8GHz of performance in return for a mere 0.6 to 2.5 watts of power.
ASUSTek’s adoption of Atom technology adds some welcome green polish to the popular Eee PC line, which currently runs on Intel’s Celeron-M mobile processor. The Celeron-M runs at a meagre 630MHz while sucking up as much as 35 watts of power.
Despite industry reports, it’s presently unclear as to which of the Eee PC models will receive Intel’s Atom processors -- the 7-inch 700 series or new 9-inch 900 series -- or whether ASUSTek will instead incorporate the technology into the not-yet-released 10-inch model due to appear in the second half of 2008. It could, of course, introduce Atom across the board.
Most recently, ASUSTek upgraded its million-selling Eee PC line by introducing the new 900 series, which comes with an improved 9-inch screen (1024x600), optional Linux or Windows XP, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and the choice of 12GB or 20GB of SSD storage.
The hot-selling original 700 series, which only launched in November of 2007, comes with a modest 7-inch screen (800x480), a Linux operating system, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and a maximum 8GBs of SSD. Standard features across the line include an onboard 1.3 mega pixel Web camera, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity and up to 3 hours of battery operation.
The new 900 series Eee PC laptop will launch in the UK on May 01 for a recommended retail price of 329 GBP.
