Whether stung into action following the recent price slashes initiated by rival chipmaker Intel Corp., or simply strengthening its own product portfolio in a timely fashion, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has this week revealed three new additions to its existing x86 Phenom range.

AMD is aiming the new Phenom X3 triple-core entrants at the top end of the enthusiast market, describing them as best combined with the company’s 780G chipset in order to provide users with a complete processor and integrated graphics solution that supplies a total HD experience along with visually stunning gaming and digital performance in one package.
“In today’s market customers are too often forced to weigh the benefits of one component over another [namely CPUs and GPUs] while sifting through one-sided marketing claims,” said Leslie Sobon, AMD director of Product and Brand Management. “AMD is the only company in the world that is able to deliver a balanced platform solution without compromise, delivering a thrilling visual experience and powerful multi-threaded application performance.”
Rather than an Intel-prompted knee jerk, AMD claims that the emergence of its new trio of Phenom X3 processors is by way of response to the growing market call for increased performance with (“true”) multi-core capabilities, alongside current real-world scenarios such as capably hosting demanding applications such as Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. And industry feedback would appear to support that outlook.
“By using the combination of AMD Phenom X3 triple-core processors and the latest AMD 780G motherboards, we now have the ability to create incredibly powerful high definition home entertainment systems for our customers,” enthused Todd Swank, vice president of marketing at Minnesota-based custom PC specialist Nor-Tech. “When customers witness the smooth playback of their Blu-Ray movies and their other high definition content on our machines, they are just blown away!”
Set to be made available for order through AMD’s leading providers, the new 8000 series processors are: the Phenom X3 8750, which runs at 2.4GHz and will come with a price of $195 USD; then there’s the X3 8650, which pushes 2.3GHz in return for $165 USD; while the X3 8450 costs $145 USD and delivers 2.1GHz.
