Recent corporate shame may have sparked rioting in the streets of the South Korean capital, but that hasn’t stopped Samsung Electronics from introducing two pocket-friendly and stylish music and media devices into the watching US market.

In a move to reaffirm its position as “an award-winning leader in consumer electronics innovation and design,” Samsung has this week whipped the covers off its latest fashion-forward offerings, the S2 ‘Pebble’ MP3 player and also the S3 Slim Portable Media Player (PMP).
“With the S2 and S3, consumers now have more compact and thin MP3 and portable media player options to choose from without needing to sacrifice overall functionality or multimedia playback,” commented Reid Sullivan, the vice president of Digital Audio and Video Marketing at Samsung Electronics America.
First up is the stone-shaped S2 ‘Pebble’ (pictured above), which is an ultra-compact music player capable of hosting MP3, WMA and OGG file playback for up to 13 hours on a single charge from the rechargeable Li-Poly battery. The miniature player also comes equipped with 1GB of internal flash memory, which Samsung offers is sufficient for around 16 hours of audio data.
Beyond the Pebble’s somewhat gimmicky playback-influenced flashing LED gizmo and its black, white, red, green and purple colour options, the otherwise elegant little device also includes a full button control interface along with Samsung’s proprietary sound technology, Digital Natural Sound engine 2.0 (DNSe), which provides high-quality acoustics optimised for playback through the player’s bundled earphones.
Then there’s the “all-new” S3 Slim PMP, which offers full multimedia functionality packed into a compact and lightweight unit, which translates into a mere 0.4-inches in thickness and a total weight of just 1.8 ounces. Samsung describes the slender S3 as being “about the size of a standard business card holder” that combines MP3, WMA music file compatibility with an FM radio and recorder, JPEG photo viewer, MPEG video player, text reader and compact game system.
As with the Pebble, the S3 comes with a rechargeable Li-Poly battery -- although the S3’s is able to deliver around 25 hours of audio playback and up to 4 hours of video on a single charge. The S3 also offers more internal storage than its Pebble counterpart, with users able to secure much more mobile content thanks to the inclusion of either 4GB or 8GB of flash memory.
Available in black, white, green, red, and blue, the S3 Slim Portable Media Player provides its video playback courtesy of a 1.8-inch TFT display screen (240x320), ideally suited for short video clips and photo slideshows, while audio performance is boosted by the DNSe 2.0 sound engine.
Both the 1GB S2 Pebble and 4GB S3 Slim Portable Media Player are expected to hit North American retail outlets in June of 2008. Prices have not yet been confirmed by Samsung.
