The recent iPhone price drop introduced in the United Kingdom certainly looks to have had a rampant retail effect for both carrier O2 and mainstay outlet the Carphone Warehouse with units apparently selling out less than two weeks after the reduction was made.

Gadget and technology magazine T3 is reporting that a spokesperson for both O2 and Carphone Warehouse has today confirmed that stock of the £169 GBP iPhone (8GB) has been depleted, leaving only Apple as a direct sales point. However, continued attraction is likely to take a substantial hit seeing as Apple’s price for 8GB iPhone has remained unchanged and is still £269 GBP.
“We have now confirmed that the 8GB iPhone has sold out in Carphone Warehouse and O2 stores nationwide,” said the spokesperson. “We are reviewing our stock situation after such phenomenal demand but first and foremost are pleased the price promotion has allowed more and more customers to appreciate the excitement of the iPhone.”
Rumour surrounding the O2 and Carphone Warehouse price reduction suggests that it was implemented to drive potentially flagging interest in Apple’s touch-screen device, which costs a hefty amount in a UK market where consumers are generally not expected to pay for their hardware when signing up for a long-term usage contract.
A similar price cut has been made in Germany, where exclusive carrier T-Mobile recently slashed the price of the 8GB model down to a mere €99 Euros. Current price cut chatter points to the possibility of French carrier Orange following suit, although parent company France Telecom has denied any such move.
Other related iPhone speculation points to somewhat disappointing public interest due to the sub-standard EDGE technology used in the first-generation iPhone -- in a European market much more accustomed to the data speed advantages of 3G technology.
With Apple CEO Steve Jobs expected to officially reveal the new 3G iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco between June 09 and June 13, it is therefore quite possible that regional price reductions are popping up as carriers strive to clear out any remaining EDGE models.
