Arriving as contrary evidence to accusations that Psystar’s much talked about Mac clone, the Open Computer, is little more than a hack job fronting a malicious phishing scam, a new video clip posted by gadget blog Gizmodo appears to confirm that the desktop PC is genuine and is indeed playing host to Apple’s exclusive operating system.

The video in question, which was offered up by Gizmodo reader Patrick (a.k.a. Whiskeyfrown), clearly shows the Psystar desktop PC connected to a Dell monitor prior to the initiation of the boot up process.
At this point, as the computer’s ludicrously loud internal fan kicks into action, watchers may well assume that Psystar’s tower has been abruptly moved into a wind tunnel or onto a busy runway at an international airport.
Meanwhile, the Dell monitor momentarily shows a Windows-esque bios screen before blinking forward to reveal Psystar’s proclaimed Mac OS X 10.5.2 operating system, which is in clear violation of Apple’s licensing restriction. Specifically, absolutely no third-party computer manufacturers have been granted licensing permission by Apple to include the Mac OS within their hardware.
While the boot up time is noticeably swift, Whiskeyfrown has worryingly pointed out that System Profiler mistakenly believes the computer is actually a Mac Pro unit, while Software Update will not recognise the equipped OS, which means that anyone purchasing the Open Computer won’t be able to install Apple’s periodic patch releases.
Despite the ongoing discussion as to Psystar’s credibility and the precarious legal ice that it is likely skating on with its Open Computer (which was initially called the OpenMac before a swift name change to avoid trademark violation), the Florida-based company is still processing orders for its $400 USD computer.
Oddly, Apple Inc. has yet to launch any formal action against Psystar. One can only assume its battle-hardened legal team is tooling up for the job at this very moment.
While the linked-to video does show the Mac clone as a viable piece of cheaply obtained computer kit, there is still a somewhat fishy smell lingering about Psystar, which is an unsettling aroma perfectly captured in this extremely dodgy promotional video clip the company recently created to help market its Open Computer.
