Leading walk-in and online movie rental service Blockbuster is bolstering its entertainment appeal in the United States this week by announcing the widespread in-store adoption of retail videogame software and hardware.

Revealed as part of a broader plan to expand its game business, Blockbuster is to offer full-purchase access to videogame titles, hardware and accessories for customers of its corporate-owned US stores.
Formats included in the retail videogame rollout include the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii home consoles, and also the portable Nintendo DS, which is the world’s most popular gaming platform. Blockbuster has also said that it will be adding more game titles to its existing range of videogame rentals.
“We’re committed to offering a full assortment of everything gamers want in our stores -- hardware, accessories and retail and rental games across all platforms,” said Rod Murray, vice-president of games merchandising at Blockbuster Inc.
To help bolster its spread of full-purchase gaming software, hardware and accessories, Blockbuster will also be offering up promotional consumer bundles -- such as its new and exclusive PlayStation 3 movie and game pack.
For a total of $449.99, the bundle includes the Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3 (40GB), a PS3/Blu-ray media remote controller, an HDMI cable, “Spiderman 3” on Blu-ray and the “Transformers” videogame. The pack also comes with a Blockbuster 12-week PS3/Blu-ray rental card that entitles the user to one free PS3 or Blu-ray rental per week for 12 consecutive weeks.
