Available via a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) service, consumers will be able to view preview content from CinemaNow’s online library of 10,000 full-length movies, TV shows and music videos through their mobile handsets. Then, if duly tempted by that preview content, users can then purchase and remotely download their chosen media to any CinemaNow Media Manager-connected device such as a PC, digital TV, portable media player, set-top box, or network-attached storage unit.
“As Internet-enabled phones rise in popularity, companies need to keep pace with innovation, offering solutions which leverage that feature,” said David Cook, president and COO of CinemaNow. “This partnership with uVuMobile has helped CinemaNow pioneer another first-to-market digital distribution method that we expect will make a tremendous difference in the industry by giving customers access to movies anytime, anywhere.”
The WAP delivery service is built through a combination of CinemaNow’s proprietary digital entertainment distribution technology and uVuMobile’s Media Distribution Platform, the latter of which allows content owners to publish their media to mobile users on any carrier network and through all manner of compatible devices.
“uVuMobile excels in the portable video experience with our integrated mobile solutions. Combining our solutions with premium rental video content from CinemaNow creates an optimal ‘on-the-go’ service for consumers who are demanding a more flexible way to acquire and manage their digital entertainment,” enthused Scott Hughes, chief technology officer at uVuMobile.
While mobile service prices have not yet been finalised, the prospect of being out of the house and initiating a remote movie download that will be ready and waiting upon return might well tempt many mobile users. CinemaNow currently charges its online customers $14.99 USD for a single Net purchase and around $1.99 USD for a rental.
CinemaNow has also suggested that this initial rollout of the mobile digital distribution service could well expand to include full video downloads to the customer’s handset by sometime in 2009.
