Specifically, new movie releases offered up by major film studios and premier independent studios on the retail DVD format will also be released for download via iTunes on the same day.
“We’re thrilled to bring iTunes Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with the DVD release,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We think movie fans will love being able to buy their favorites from major and independent studios.”
The synchronised content releases will arrive courtesy of 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.
Available for home viewing (in the US only) on PC and Mac computer systems and via Apple TV, or on-the-go through video-compatible iPod players and the iPhone smartphone, new movie releases will cost $14.99 each (rental: $3.99, $4.99 HD), while the majority of older catalogue movies will be priced at $9.99 (rental: $2.99).
Starting off the new synched delivery service, new movies arriving on both iTunes and DVD this week include American Gangster and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, while other existing DVD arrivals include Juno, I Am Legend, Cloverfield, There Will Be Blood, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
Since its launch, the Apple iTunes Store has gathered more than 6 million song tracks, 600 television shows, and more than 1,500 movies (200 in HD).
