No matter how sexily addictive you thought Research in Motion’s popular BlackBerry brand to be, a fresh nugget of tantalising rumour has this week surfaced that, if true, is likely to increase appeal considerably in the not-so-distant future.
Is this the first glimpse at RIM\'s new clamshell \'Kickstart\' BlackBerry handset? Image: Boy Genius Report.
Specifically, the ever-diligent gadget watchers over at technology blog Boy Genius Report (BGR) are claiming that the above-photographed mobile handset is none other than a brand new clamshell folding BlackBerry smartphone codenamed the ‘Kickstart.’
It is widely known that Canadian smartphone developer RIM is busy developing its latest candy bar 3G BlackBerry, which has been saddled with the working title of ‘Meteor’ by those consumers rubbing their hands with expectant glee. However, the sudden sighting of this, much more traditional-looking handset, is likely to arrive as somewhat of a shock to the helplessly twitchy CrackBerry community.
In its post, BGR outlines that it has been sitting on knowledge of RIM’a radical BlackBerry design departure for quite some time and has only now finally obtained the photographic evidence required to support its revelation.
“It is a BlackBerry clamshell -- a flip phone and codenamed the Kickstart! Let me repeat this. This isn’t fake, this isn’t a hoax,” insists the tech blog. “We’ve known RIM is planning to launch a flip phone within the year, and we now have the pictures to prove it!”
According to BGR’s report, the phone comes complete with both external and internal LCD screens, utilises a SureType keyboard, has an onboard digital camera, and even offers users the advantages of trackball navigation.
While further detailing is naturally a little scarce at this time -- not least because RIM is silent -- the release date currently being banded around for the BlackBerry Kickstart is sometime prior to the close of 2008.
