California-based Adobe’s Open Screen project will remove existing licensing fees connected with mobile versions of Flash, openly publish related code details, and also remove restrictions associated with how the software can be used, reports the BBC news Web site.
With Flash adoption rates via online computer systems believed to be around 98 percent, Adobe offers that one of its main ambitions via the Open Screen initiative is to give television and movie creators an easier way to have their content hosted by mobile handsets and set-top boxes.
Looking to expand on the company’s Flash Lite mobile platform, already installed on millions of mobile phones, Adobe is looking for the flexibility of Open Screen to lead to the creation of a single versatile Flash-based player capable of running on any mobile device without forcing developers to struggle with the potential compatibility frustrations of individual hardware and software.
Working alongside notable mobile industry heavyweights such as Sony Ericsson, Nokia Corp., and LG Electronics, as well as leading content partners including the BBC, NBC and MTV, Adobe hopes that by showing a willingness to open its Flash technology, more developers will be attracted to crafting applications, features and games for mobile devices and delivery.
