Following on from news that the iPhone will soon make its formal entry into Canada, the down under arm of tech Web site CNET is reporting that Apple’s little touch-screen wonder will also hit the Australian market in the next few months.

According to an anonymous source on CNET.com.au, California-based Apple Inc. is preparing the official Australian launch of the iPhone, with Optus indicated as one of several regional carriers likely to host the extremely popular smartphone device.
While still firmly planted in the realms of rumour at this stage, confirmation of the Aussie iPhone’s imminent arrival is expected to emerge at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which will be held in San Francisco from June 09 to June 13.
In terms of which iPhone iteration patient Australians will duly receive -- namely the existing first-generation (2.5G) EDGE model or the upcoming second-generation 3G model -- the unnamed source offers that a late June retail launch would bring with it the superior data speeds of 3G.
To compound that suggestion, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to officially announce the 3G iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference.
At the tail end of last week, telecommunications titan Rogers officially confirmed that it will be bringing the iPhone to Canada before the end of the year, which would also indicate further embracement of the superior 3G model.
The iPhone has proved to be a huge hit in the United States since first launching their in June of 2007. Apple’s innovative, Web-enabled smartphone required only 74 days to surpass 1 million sales throughout the region.
That popularity hasn’t translated quite so well into European markets however, with carriers in both the UK and Germany recently hacking down prices on the 8GB iPhone in order to help stimulate flagging consumer interest.
