Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 return for download

Don’t say this too loud for fear of bringing down a jinx, but it would appear that Microsoft’s recent software compatibility issues have been sidestepped and Service Pack 3 (SP3) for the Windows XP operating system has finally been reopened for full download.

Redmond-based Microsoft Corp. had initially hoped to unleash the SP3 update on April 29, but was forced to delay it due to clashes with Microsoft Dynamics RMS, which is a management software application used by small to medium-sized retail businesses.The Windows XP SP3 update, which is the final such update for the soon-to-be-retired operating system, is available through every system’s Windows Update feature. It can also be downloaded directly through Microsoft’s official online Download Center.Also, a similar Dynamics RMS problem was found to be affecting Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Vista. The problem had led to Microsoft temporarily suspending automatic distribution of the long-awaited update while it was being addressed.While downloads of both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 have now resumed, the hiccup itself has not yet been resolved. Specifically, Microsoft has placed a filter on the service packs so that Dynamics RMS customers are protected by not being able to install the problematic update(s).Microsoft has said it is currently working on a full fix for the compatibility issue, which it expects to have ready before the close of May. The software giant has also urged Dynamics RMS customers already running XP SP3 or Vista SP1 to get in contact with Microsoft Customer Support for more information.

Another issue has been circulating. Martin over at gHacks had a decent write up for it.

'The Windows XP Service Pack 3 is available again and many users have already made the switch to protect their system with the latest security updates. If you have installed Internet Explorer 7 before updating the system to the third Service Pack and decided to uninstall it again you might have noticed that the option to uninstall the browser is grayed out and therefor not possible.'
