I am anxiously awaiting the new Metallica album and do so with an open mind, because the last one was truly a dud. I know the band has angered many with it's stance on protecting their catalogue from being openly traded on the internet, but I apparently am one of the few who agree with them. Music is an art form, and as artists, they have the right to protect what belongs to them. If a painter had his canvases scanned and offered online for free, would they not be pursuing litigation against the perpetrators???? They would, in a heartbeat. Why should music be any different. It's a commodity like any other that should be paid for. I'm tired of the whiny babies out there who are too damned cheap to pay for music, and criticize bands for wanting to be paid for the commodity they produce.
'A scan of a canvas is hardly the same thing as stealing the artists work. Just as a copy of a CD is not the same as stealing the artists work. '
Actually the law does not agree. Both those examples are a breach of copyright. Also the two examples are very different. Most of the value in a painting is in the original. With an album most of the value is in the CD not the master, since it is a mass market. Though of course prints of paintings also have value.
If I draw a picture and you photocopy it without permission then you are stealing.
It is not a difficult concept to understand.
You go out and spend months painting something or making an album and then let me copy it instead of buying. See how you feel then.
There is no such thing as a free lunch, only people who have not grown up yet fail to understand this.
