A report released by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (MNP) has confirmed China's lead as the world's worst emitter of carbon dioxide.

The study showed the country, which has experienced a surge in economic growth over the last decade, increased its CO2 emissions by eight percent in 2007 to comfortably lead the United States by fourteen percent.
“The difference had grown to a 14 percent difference, and that’s indeed quite large,” said Jos Olivier, a senior scientist at the Dutch agency to the New York Times . “It’s now so large that it’s quite a robust conclusion.”
Much of China's carbon emissions is due to its heavy reliance on coal to fuel its economy with the report adding that twenty percent of China's consumption of polluting CO2 is caused by the cement industry's heavy energy use.
According to the report: "Of all industrial processes, the cement production process is the largest source of CO2, apart from fossil fuel use. It contributes around 5% to the total of global CO2 emissions from fuel use and industrial activities. With a production increase of 10% in 2007, China now has a share in global cement production of about 50%." "Cement manufacturing is responsible for almost 20% of the total of China’s CO2 emissions, including those from fuel combustion for heating the kilns. After the earthquake which recently hit the Sichuan province, it may be expected that the rebuilding of houses and roads for over 5 million people will cause the cement demand to soar even further," the report continues.
The main body of the world's scientists are of the opinion that increased carbon emissions are the cause of damaging global warming and have warned countries they have only a few years to reverse the increasing trend.
