In a move to widen the entertainment package options of its first class and business class passengers, American carrier United Airlines has this week revealed a new personalised in-flight entertainment system that will enable cabin connectivity for those passengers equipped with either an Apple iPod music and media player or an Apple iPhone smartphone handset.

Arriving as the first U.S. carrier to offer such a service, qualifying United Airlines passengers will be able to take advantage of listening to or watching personal content via a 15.4-inch personal television screen while also receiving a complimentary battery charge for their connected device.
The new service will be officially introduced on the carrier’s existing trans-Atlantic route between Washington, D.C. and Zurich before then steadily expanding its integration coverage to include United’s entire fleet of international, wide-body aircraft over the next two years.
“Our guests may now watch or listen to what they want, when they want with programming they choose,” trumpeted Graham Atkinson, executive vice president and Chief Customer Officer for Illinois-based United Airlines. “United will continue to provide services and technology that makes our customers’ travel experiences more relaxed and enjoyable.”
Developed by Panasonic Avionics, the 30-pin iPod/iPhone connectivity cable will help add a personal touch to United’s already bulging array of in-flight entertainment, which consists of more than 150 hours of movies and TV shows available on demand, along with XM radio access and even videogames.
A subsidiary of UAL Corporation, United Airlines is one of the world’s biggest carriers, boasting a fleet of around 360 aircraft and 55,000 employees in the United States and worldwide.
