If carrying immense amounts of personal data from place to place is something that you regularly do, then perhaps you’ll be interested in the wonderfully named Little Big Disk, which is being offered up by the tech boffins at LaCie as a new palm-friendly external hard drive perfect formed for all your professional portability needs.

Beyond the obvious advantages of its small external sizing (see picture), the Little Big Disk weighs in at a mere 1.4 pounds (0.63 kilos), which Oregon-based LaCie is keen to stress is 60 percent lighter than storage drives found inside conventional desktop computers.
The real selling point of the Little Big Disk lies with its impressive 1TB capacity, making the device “a great solution for users needing versatile storage for high-intensity computing applications.”
LaCie claims the Little Big Disk Quadra 1TB (to give it its full name) arrives as the industry’s largest capacity and most powerful mobile storage solution, even managing to outperform the company’s existing 400GB and 500GB model variants.
Internally, the Little Big Disk houses not one but two 2.5-inch hard disks that work in tandem through an onboard RAID 0 configuration enabling a burst transfer rate of up to 110MB/s when used in conjunction with its eSATA, or up to 80MB/s when using its dual FireWire 800 feature.
The 1TB drive comes equipped with solid cross-platform connectivity thanks to the inclusion of a single eSATA (3Gbits), two FireWire 800s (FireWire 400 compatible with included adaptor), and also a USB 2.0 interface.
According to Arnaud Prezelin, LaCie’s product manager for Creative Pro solutions, the Little Big Disk is perfectly suited for a range of intensive mobile applications that would see the drive offering photographers access to thousands of RAW pictures while videographers could also rely on tremendous capacity and transfer rates to edit their captured footage.
“Powerful yet portable, the Little Big Disk Quadra is an essential tool for meeting a professional’s mobile needs,” chimed Prezelin. “While travelling, users no longer need to carry heavy devices and power cables to operate a high-capacity 1TB external hard drive.”
Other contributing factors in the appeal of the 1TB Little Big Disk include: LaCie’s proprietary and fan-free d2 heat sink, which provides quiet operation while editing content; full plug-and-play compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Windows Vista; the pre-installed LaCie Setup Assistant; and advanced backup and restore software EMC Retrospect for Mac and Windows.
The new Little Big Disk Quadra 1TB external drive is available through LaCie’s online store and also through the company’s network of specialised dealers. Interested pro photographers and videographers (or any other performance-intensive media types) should expect to pay $659.99 USD for LaCie’s latest offering.
