Already positioned as the number-one music seller in the United States after recently usurping retail giant Wal-Mart, the Apple-owned iTunes Store has moved to reinforce its position of dominance by announcing that users have now purchased and downloaded in excess of five billion music tracks through the online portal.

Beyond beating its corporate chest regarding the five billion music download landmark, Apple is also keen to make sure that consumers -- and its rival music and media download portals -- are aware that it offers the largest music catalogue in the world with over eight million songs at users’ fingertips.
Of course, iTunes is not just the premium choice for music lovers, with Apple also reminding anyone who’ll listen that its iTunes customers are now renting and/or purchasing more than 50,000 movie downloads each and every God-given day, which, you guessed it, makes iTunes “the world’s most popular online movie store” too. Fancy that.
Current leading media providers signed up to deliver content via iTunes include the likes of 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios Home, Walt Disney Studios and Warner Brothers.
“The iTunes Store is the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over eight million songs, over 20,000 TV episodes and over 2,000 films including over 350 in stunning high definition [HD] video,” exclaims Cupertino-based Apple in its congratulatory press release.
Market research figures provided by NPD Group in early April confirmed iTunes as the leading music seller in the United States. The figures were taken from the amount of music that both walk-in and online retailers sold throughout the months of January and February of 2008.
In related news, Apple has announced that Australia’s very first Apple retail store opened its doors to consumers yesterday (Thursday, June 19) at 367 George Street in Sydney. The expansive triple-floored store is dedicated to Macs, iPods and customer services, including the world’s largest Genius Bar for providing free expert advice and personal device training.
Since Apple opened its first retail store in May of 2001, it has expanded the line to include 215 stores worldwide and has served almost 350 million visitors in countries such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, and Italy.
Well done, Apple (insert polite applause here).
