Please note this is not an either-or situation. There are more options that stay with EOL XP or go with DRM Vista. Be an informed consumer and at least evaluate the other choices. Walk into an Apple store and look at their new OSX operating system. Browse Dell's web page on their Ubuntu operating system offerings. Download the Ubuntu LiveCD and try out Ubuntu at no-cost, on your computer, without making any modifications. Happy XP End of Life Day: Here's hoping you make a change for the better.

'which now means that computer vendors will not be able to directly offer anything other than Windows Vista on their systems.'

Seeing as though a lot of the bigger vendors are now releasing various distributions of Linux on their systems, they WILL be offering more than Vista on their systems. Do your research.

Get real! While some are offering various Linux OS's, they are few and far between. It's not like you can walk into any Best Buy in the world and get a PC with anything other than MS's OS.
You do YOUR homework! I just bought a new computer and the OS was a consideration, so I KNOW how hard it is to find Linux.

Actually dell still offers XP and will for another year to come. It's a *cough cough* downgrade option.

Dell also offers computers pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux.

Music studio, industrial, and other specialist soft/hardware users are gonna have a hard time. Not all equipment has drivers, not all plugins work in Vista, and the impossibility to turn off search indexing is a real problem (and useless since I don't use Word, Excel etc. in my studio). I returned a laptop because I mistakenly thought I could automatically downgrade the preinstalled Vista to XP. Not so.

Scary, being at the mercy of the whims of one company. Hey Ballmer, it's just an operating system! Let the users decide what add-ons they need!

It's a great day for Linux based operating systems.
Maybe this will help wean more users off of MS.

Oh, and before anyone says 'Ubuntu is available as a music studio version', sure. If you use Soundblaster compatible hardware. The Linux USB2 sync problem prevents use of many pro-level external audio interface devices. But perhaps Linux should be given a close look again. The world-wide dependence on a single proprietary OS is not healthy.

I can't believe Microsoft is cutting off its loyal and well-trained Customer base. They've paid for Win95, Win98, a few for WinME, 2000, and XP. Now they are being asked to pay for and WAIT while Microsoft mis-spends its $50 Billion R&D funds. The Linux groups should put together education for everyone specifically jumping off the Windows bus. It's like we've all paid for a date with Paris Hilton, and instead get a janitor's closet at the Hilton.

You Microsoft people are just a bunch of babies. Get Linux.
