The latest software update (v2.40) for the PlayStation 3 videogames console has been detailed by Sony Computer Entertainment America, revealing the long-awaited emergence of XcrossMediaBar (XMB) in-game access that enables players to connect and communicate with other gamers without having to leave the enjoyment of their favourite virtual world.

In-game XMB access will see gamers chatting via a messaging system, while also allowing them to also view their friends’ online status and profiles, and add new friends to their Friends List (now doubled to a capacity of 100) without ever having to drop out of gameplay. In-game XMB access is provided by simply pressing the game controller’s central ‘PS’ button.
Other features related to XMB access include the ability to sign-in to the PlayStation Network (PSN), manage PlayStation Store downloads, quit out of a game, adjust options found within the PS3’s Settings category, and even use the XMB to swiftly utilise a Google-powered search tool that bypasses the PS3’s standard Web browser.
Another (currently groundwork-based) aspect similar to that already available through the Xbox 360 is the addition of developer tools that will enable customisable music in future software titles. Once implemented, this will essentially enable users to replace a game’s default soundtrack with music of their own choosing plucked directly from personal collections stored on the PS3’s internal hard drive.
Designed to specifically enhance the PlayStation 3’s community and in-game experience levels, v2.40 also shines the spotlight on SCEA’s recently unveiled ‘Trophies’ system, which enables gamers to flaunt their game-related accomplishments to all and sundry via bronze, silver, gold, and platinum performance rewards showcased through their personal profiles.
Sony’s official press release uses the words “trophies” and “accomplishments,” for this particular update addition, carefully avoiding the word “achievements,” which is exactly the term Microsoft uses in the rather similar “Achievement Points” system tied to each of its Xbox 360 software releases and showcased through player profiles.
“We listen closely to our community, and we’re proud to deliver new features that have been among the most requested,” said Peter Dille, SCEA’s senior vice president of Marketing and PlayStation Network. “These features provide new ways for the PS3 community to easily connect, communicate and share gaming experiences with one another in and out of games.”
Due to roll out initially via PSN exclusive Super Stardust HD, the Trophies reward system will also be included across other first and third-party titles throughout 2008 and beyond, with Sony outlining that it will soon appear through the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Resistance: Fall of Man 2, NBA 09, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Buzz! Quiz TV and many others.
The v2.40 Sony PS3 system update will be widely available as a free download from July 02.
