There’s little doubting the belief that ASUSTeK Computer Inc. has in its diminutive Eee line, recently expanding the original Eee PC series to include bigger screen sizes, the Intel Atom processor and Windows XP, while the Taipei-based manufacturer has also recently revealed its small form-factor desktop ambitions via the upcoming Eee Box.

And so, with both ultra portable sub-notebook and small form-factor desktop markets seemingly addressed, where should ASUS now direct its industry intent?
How about taking a pot shot at Cupertino-based Apple Inc., and the eponymous iMac?
Meet the ASUS Eee Monitor (as it is presently known), a compact all-in-one desktop that just might give Apple’s uber-popular iMac a cast iron run for its money.
While ASUS has not yet ‘officially’ trumpeted the arrival of its Eee Monitor, tech chatter is high this week following the emergence of the above photo, which more than adequately showcases the computer’s slick lines and clean design.
Concrete information regarding the Eee Monitor’s internal and external specifications are also not yet available, but it is believed that the computer will sport up to a 21-inch display screen, function on Intel’s 1.6GHz N270 Atom processor, and also come with an optional 40GB solid state drive (SSD) or an 80GB hard disk drive (HDD).
In terms of outer detailing and connection points, the Eee Monitor offers four USB ports, an Ethernet port, modem access, a selection of audio ports, and a card reader. It should also arrive carrying a Denon-branded onboard speaker system, a built in Web camera, and a TV-tuner as standard.
Unsurprisingly, given the distinct touchy-feely nature of this first glimpse at the Eee Monitor, pricing is something that tech watchers are merely speculating over. Current estimates -- based on existing or forthcoming Eee entrants -- place the new Eee Monitor in the vicinity of $500 USD.
While Apple CEO Steve Jobs is unlikely to be losing any sleep (or profit margins) at this juncture, especially given the fairly modest specifications presently attached to the pocket-friendly Eee Monitor, a moderately priced 24-inch model powered by Intel’s Core 2 Duo technology might just be enough to firmly prick Apple’s ears.
