The popularity of NAND-based solid state drive (SSD) storage continues its upwards surge against conventional hard disk drive (HDD) solutions, and this week that rise sees Sunnyvale-based OCZ Technology reveal a new 2.5-inch SATA II solid state drive that addresses one of SSD’s post persistent bugbears: its cost.

While roundly applauded for its enhanced performance, improved energy efficiency, and robust reliability, SSD technology has thus far only been chipping away at HDD’s market positioning due, in the main, to its somewhat inflated pricing beside the considerably cheaper hard disk alternative.
However, through the emergence of its new Core Series drives, OCZ Technology is offering all the advantages of NAND Flash SSD storage with a per gigabyte price set at 50 percent lower that other high-speed products currently available on the storage market.
According to OCZ, the arrival of the Core Series marks the first time that SSD technology has been put within easy reach of the “average consumer,” and also sees the format tangibly delivering on its promise as a worthy replacement for HDD storage in consumer-targeted mobile devices.
“It is our mission to deliver the highest performance products to consumers at reasonable prices, and with the release of the Core Series SSDs we have done exactly that,” exclaimed Ryan Petersen, chief executive officer of OCZ Technology.
Described as being “perfect for notebooks,” OCZ hopes its Core Series proves itself as the ideal choice to deliver energy-efficient computing that finds favour with consumers by prolonging battery life, increasing access and seek times, and providing operational peace-of-mind through its superior shock protection and functional reliability.
The Core Series will arrive in capacities choices of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, while delivering read and write speeds of 120-143Mbps and 80-93Mbps, and seek times of less than 0.35ms -- which OCZ is keen to point out makes the Core Series up to ten times faster in seek-time and up to 40 percent faster on read/write than the best 2.5-inch HDD currently at market. And all alongside 50 percent increased efficiency too.
Equipped with a durable, lightweight alloy housing, the Core Series comes with an excellent 1.5 million hour ‘mean time between failure’ (MTBF) rating, along with a two-year warranty and OCZ service and support, which should help further enhance customer faith in the product.
Accompanying prices for the Core Series should see the 32GB model selling for $169 USD, while the 64GB and 128GB models are expected to sell for $259 USD and $479 USD respectively.
