After almost a week of fielding sticky customer complaints following the sudden removal of its eagerly anticipated but apparently buggy v2.40 PlayStation 3 system update, Sony Computer Entertainment has placed an amended v2.41 update back onto its servers for user download.

“We released PS3 firmware update 2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB [CrossMediaBar] wouldn’t display after the update was installed,” outlined PlayStation Network Operations director Eric Lempel via Sony’s official PS3 blog. “We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.”
Sony initially pulled v2.40 from availability when concerned users that had installed the update began posting on the PlayStation 3 forums that their hardware was seizing up at the XMB screen (the PS3’s version of a PC desktop), refusing to display category and settings icons, and even preventing online access to certain software titles.
Speaking via the PlayStation 3 blog on July 02, Patrick Seybold, Sony’s director of Corporate Communications & Social Media, confirmed the temporary removal of v2.40 while insisting that the consumer electronics giant had received only “a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update.”
With Sony claiming that any and all problems are now fixed and v2.41 is ready to go, PlayStation 3 owners can once again look forward to getting their hands on in-game XMB access, which enables player communication without having to drop out of gameplay (believed to be the PS3 user community’s most requested feature addition).
v2.41 also introduces the Trophies reward system, which bestows PlayStation 3 players with ego-boosting accolades based on their ongoing gameplay accomplishments (similar to the existing Achievement Points system employed by the Xbox 360).
“We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience,” added Lempel in his blog posting. “Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!”
