Seoul-based electronics giant Samsung, which is considered to be a leader in the production of advanced semiconductor technology, has this week announced the full mass production of its latest 128GB multi-level cell (MLC) solid state drives (SSDs).

Following hot on the heels of mass production of its 64GB MLC solid state devices, which started flowing from fabrication facilities in June, Samsung’s new 128GB capacity drives will be produced as 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch models.
Beyond the enhanced reliability, performance and efficiency associated with SSD technology, the 128GB drives offer technical specifications that include a write speed of 70Mbs and a read speed of 90Mbs, which, as Samsung is keen to point out, come close to performance standards recorded in single-level cell (SLC) SSD drives.
Samsung also claims its new 128GB MLC solid state drives will provide around 20 times more operational longevity than the current 4-5 year lifespan garnered from most conventional notebook PC hard disk drives (HDDs). And, when it comes to energy efficiency, the new SSD line requires only 0.2 watts of power consumption when in standby mode and around 0.5 watts when active.
“With the 64 GB and 128 GB MLC SSDs, we are satisfying the density requirements of most business users and many PC enthusiasts, who will appreciate not only the performance gains and added reliability, but also the more attractive pricing,” enthused Gerd Schauss, the director of Memory Marketing EMEA at Samsung Semiconductor Europe.
Featuring a 3.0 gigabit-per-second interface, the 128GB MLC solid state drive consists of 64 MLC NAND flash memory chips of 16 gigabits each, optimised single-chip controller technology, and advanced flash-management firmware technology -- all enclosed in a brushed metallic casing that measures a mere 100mm x 69.8mm x 9.5mm.
With 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models already flying out of its factories, Samsung also has plans to begin full production of a 256GB SSD before the close of 2008 in order to meet the growing demand for solid state technology. Samsung fully expects SSD market sales to increase by some 800 percent between now and 2010.
