With iPhone fever once again in full effect following the official July 11 launch of Apple’s newly revamped 3G smartphone, exclusive U.S. carrier AT&T is looking to further exploit current consumer focus by tabling a tempting ‘back-to-school’ price slash on the GSM Palm Centro.

Moreover, San Antonio-based AT&T has actively moved to polish up the retail appeal of the Palm OS-based Centro by slapping it with a limited time $30 USD price drop designed to attract those weak-willed parents prepared to appease their child’s incessant technophile chirping via a snazzy smartphone, but perhaps not yet prepared to shove a meaty iPhone worm down their throats.
The temporary offer, which (surprise, surprise) started on July 11 and runs through to September 20, sees the Palm Centro slashed down to $69.99 USD following the processing of all instant and mail-in rebates attached to a standard two-year service contract.
The offer price is active for all prospective customers looking to sign up for a discounted Palm Centro through either online or walk-in AT&T stores and also covers all available Centro colour choices, which include the likes of glacier white, obsidian black and the recently released electric blue.
AT&T’s move to shine the ‘back-to-school’ promotional spotlight on the GSM Centro arrives as just the latest value offer surrounding Palm’s chocolate bar smartphone. For example, industry watcher PalmInfocenter points out that American retail chain Best Buy has been offering the Centro (via AT&T and Sprint) for as little as $39.99 USD. It also highlights a Sprint Centro offer through Letstalk.com, which delivers the handset for free along with a 1GB microSD card for all new sign-ups.
Those prospective customers presently nursing their pricked ears can expect to receive a 4.4oz GSM handset (sub-3G) equipped with a colour 320x320 Transreflective touch-screen display, the Palm operating system, Bluetooth Wireless v1.2, 64MB of onboard memory (expandable up to 4GB via microSD), a 1.3 mega pixel camera with 2x digital zoom and video capture, and up to 4 hours of talk time (300 hours of standby) thanks to its removable 1150mAh lithium-ion battery.
