Wireshark, the tool that you simply have to have if you are a security person, geek, script kiddie (sadly), or full-blown hacker who collects all the cool toys, turned the big 1-0 yesterday. Ten years, a decade of packet inspection and sniffing; my, how the time does fly. If celebrating a birthday wasn’t big enough news, then the creation of a Wireshark certification is. Come this August, you can add one more cert to your business card.

“In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that Wireshark would be as enthusiastically received as it has been over the past ten years,” exclaimed Gerald Combs, Ethereal/Wireshark project founder. “I have watched the number of downloads grow from a few thousand a month to well over 300,000 today. The success of the analyzer is due to an incredibly devoted group of developer contributors around the globe who work closely with me to continually add new features and capabilities to the tool to maintain its relevance and usefulness in modern, evolving network environments.”
CACE Technologies, along with Wireshark University, announced the rollout of The Wireshark Certification Program on Monday. The certification process is now in the testing stage, and will be officially unveiled to the public this coming August.
Wireshark University is hooking-up with VLabSource and its virtual lab environment to deliver the certification test. Using virtualization technology, VLabSource will enable a Wireshark Certification Program candidate to log into a Web-based virtual lab and launch a real instance of Wireshark on a virtual network.
“Wireshark University’s goal is to ensure that every person certified under the Wireshark Certification Program has the skills they need to troubleshoot and analyze a real network,” said Laura Chappell, principal founder of Wireshark University.
The price for the Wireshark certification test is $299 USD. Sign up to receive certification pass/fail rate and retake options here. If you want to study first before taking the test (no, seriously) then you'll perhaps want to order helpful study DVDs or sign up to take classes at WiresharkU.
