Second quarter performance figures for the U.S. personal and business computer markets may indicate that growth is currently slowing due to persistent economic uncertainty, but that hasn’t stopped computer manufacturers Apple Inc. and Dell Inc. from making their mark against Hewlett-Packard’s dominance.

According to market tracker IDC, computer manufacturers shipped around 17 million desktop and laptop computers across the United States throughout 2008’s second quarter, which equates to a growth increase of some 3.6 percent when compared to the same period in 2007.
However, IDC warns that, while current “budgetary constraints among both consumers and businesses” has resulted in market growth being somewhat “sluggish” in Q2, growth in product demand could well remain low across upcoming quarterly evaluations should economic confidence not experience a timely upturn in the region.
In terms of specific manufacturer performance for the second quarter, IDC outlines that
Dell has shipped some 5.4 million personal and business computers across the U.S. in the second quarter and was able to boost its regional market share to 32 percent, which equates to a year-on-year increase of some 12 percent.
Both IDC and information technology research company Gartner believe that Dell’s ongoing aggression in the retail arena will likely add further momentum to its performance throughout future quarterly reports should the vendor continue to press.
IDC places HP’s quarterly shipments in the U.S. at 4.2 million units for a 25.1 percent market share and 5.9 percent yearly growth. Notably, Apple Inc., which is tied with Acer for third place on the U.S. market, posted a huge 31.7 percent in yearly growth for a 7.8 percent market share.
By comparison, Gartner’s preliminary results for Q2 are slightly more generous and see HP emerge as the region’s top performer. Specifically, Gartner’s numbers suggest HP has shipped 5.2 million units in the second quarter, securing a 31.9 percent market share and yearly growth of 11.9 percent. Dell follows close behind with 4.1 million units shipped, a market share of 25.3 and growth of 5.6 percent. Apple sits alone in third (Acer fourth) with 1.3 million units, an 8.5 percent share, and a massive 38.1 percent in yearly growth.
Gartner’s global Q2 figures see Hewlett-Packard retain its overall lead thanks to 13 million units shipped worldwide, which returned an 18.1 percent total market share and year-on-year growth of 17.1 percent. Dell sits in second with 11.2 million units, a market share of 15.6 percent, and impressive growth of 21.9 percent. Acer holds third position with 6.7 million units, a 9.4 percent share of the market, and growth of 18.9 percent.
Apple is not placed in the top five vendors.
