With leading hardware manufacturers increasingly keen to make a positive impression with eco-conscious technology consumers while also earning brownie points from the likes of Greenpeace, computer giant Dell Inc. has this week whipped the leafy covers off its environmentally considerate Studio Hybrid mini PC.

Arriving through Dell for a modest starting price of $499 USD, the Hybrid mini PC looks to place less strain on component providers by being some 80 percent smaller than existing minidesktop computers, while it positively glows in terms of power consumption by requiring around 70 percent less juice than a typical system.
Adding yet more weight to the package’s overall consumer appeal, Dell has even seen fit to use recyclable materials across 95 percent of the computer’s packaging, and also bundle each Hybrid mini PC with a handy system recycling kit for when the hardware eventually outlives its operational usefulness.
Described by Texas-based Dell as its “most environmentally responsible” consumer computer, the new Hybrid mini PC is around the size of a collegiate dictionary and offers an easy-to-place and versatile physical design with an original aesthetic combining unique shape and size with the personalisation of six external jewel-toned colour or bamboo finish options.
“The design and craftsmanship of the Studio Hybrid alone are enough to cause you to do a double take,” trumpeted Michael Tatelman, vice president of Dell’s global consumer sales and marketing. “Combine that with the performance of this little beauty and its environmentally smart DNA, and you’ve got something truly unique – something that you can make your own.”
While it’s unlikely to appease the power-hungry needs of computer enthusiasts and hardcore gamers, the petite Hybrid mini PC should still provide enough everyday oomph to handle mash-ups, content for personal Web pages, and the editing and uploading of videos and digital photographs.
According to Dell, the vertical or horizontal Hybrid mini PC is at home in the living room, “fitting easily into entertainment centers, and connecting to HDTVs via a standard HDMI port.” Also, when combined with an optional wireless keyboard, users can easily switch back and forth from watching their favourite television content to checking online stats, sending e-mail, and perusing digital images via the home TV screen.
Core tech specs for the Hybrid mini PC include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Windows Vista, up to 4GB of 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, up to 320GB of storage via a Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM), Intel's Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, Intel's High Definition Audio 2.0, 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) Ethernet LAN on system board, five USB 2.0 ports, and HDMI and DVI ports.
Other optional features aligned with the Hybrid mini PC include, Wi-Fi networking, a wireless keyboard, a Blu-ray Disc drive for watching high-definition movies, and a TV tuner.
The Hybrid mini PC is available now through Dell’s online store, and is expected to make its bow at selected walk-in retailers before the close of Q3.
