It seems that every new tech gadget or device released to market these days usurps the competition by coming complete with the “world’s smallest” this, or the “industry’s largest” that. So, in order to help maintain the market’s status quo, data storage and backup specialist Fabrik is offering up the SimpleTech [re]drive, the “world’s most energy efficient” external hard drive.

With ‘energy efficiency’ existing as two of the hottest watch words in the vocabulary of today’s eco-aware tech consumers, California-based Fabrik is looking to colour itself an attractive shade of green with its SimpleTech [re]drive, which it describes as a fast, reliable, and more sustainable data storage and protection alternative.
How so, you may ask? Well, for a start, the external HDD’s outer casing consists of sustainable bamboo and recyclable aluminium, while it also comes with an approved Energy Star power adaptor and even eco-friendly packaging.
“At Fabrik, we’re making an effort to support the environment, while adapting our products to better meet consumer needs and interests,” enthused Matt McRae, the company’s vice president of marketing.
“We know we have a lot more work to do across the board as a company, but we’re committed to change and hope we’ll make a small dent in improving the environment -- through our products, services, partner choices and company best practices,” he added.
Helping to bolster its outward green appeal, the plug-n-play SimpleTech [re]drive is compatible with PC and Mac systems and is also equipped with 500GB of storage and Turbo USB 2.0, which Fabrik claims will provide users with access to as much as 25 percent quicker performance than standard USB 2.0.
Security-based peace-of-mind arrives in the form of Fabrik‘s [re]store automated backup software, which comes complete with anti-virus shielding (PC) and is updated regularly to ensure ongoing virus protection for the user.
The SimpleTech drive also allows users to potentially dodge hours of OS and application reinstallation by creating a disaster recovery CD that can be used to boot a system in the event of hardware failure.
Fabrik is keen to take user protection one step further however, with the inclusion of Fabrik Ultimate Backup, which provides SimpleTech [re]drive owners with 2GBs of free online backup space on Fabrik’s secure and encrypted servers and delivers “ultimate backup data protection” that is more than capable of handling whatever kind of disaster should strike the external drive or main computer system.
Unlimited backup capacity is available for less than $5 USD per month while, separate from its inclusion on the SimpleTech [re]drive, Fabrik Ultimate Backup is also available as a standalone protection and backup service.
The 500GB SimpleTech [re]drive is available now through U.S. online and walk-in retailers for a recommended price of $159.99 USD.
